+Keynote Address presented by Thom Holden

Mr. Holden is Director of the Corps of Engineers’ Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. He has been researching Lake Superior shipwreck histories for over 30 years. His research has been published in various Great Lakes history journals and also regional and national periodicals. He is the author of Above & Below: A History of Lighthouse and Shipwrecks at Isle Royal National Park and completed the pioneering shipwreck history survey for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. He worked on a two-year project with Lake Superior Magazine as Contributing Editor in a major revision of Dr. Julius F. Wolff’s book, Shipwrecks of Lake Superior (pub. 1990). He is a frequent lecturer on the history of the Duluth-Superior harbor and shipwrecks.

+"Ethics Seminar" presented by Jeffrey Coleman

Engineering is an important and learned profession. As members of this profession, engineers are expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and integrity. Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people. Accordingly, the services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity, and must be dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety and welfare. Engineers are faced with different situations on a daily basis while practicing engineering. This presentation will provide moral and ethical guidance to engineers in their decision making process. Most importantly, it will provide engineers with insight on how to respect and protect their profession with utmost professionalism.

Attorney Jeffrey W. Coleman, P.E., FACI, focuses his practice on construction law, professional liability defense, concrete construction, and general business law, including insurance and coverage. A licensed structural engineer with more than 30 years of experience as a practicing attorney, Coleman provides clients with a single go-to resource for both legal and risk management issues. He has represented design professionals in all matters of their business, including defense of multi-million dollar design defect and negligent construction administration claims. Nationally known for his knowledge and experience in the area of concrete construction, Coleman is the author of “Legal Issues in Concrete Construction,” and is the only attorney ever to be named a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (FACI).

Coleman received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural engineering from Iowa State University and is a cum laude graduate of the William Mitchell College of Law. He served on the national board of directors of the American Concrete Institute from 2012-2015, and has served five terms on the American Council of Civil Engineering Companies (ACEC) Minnesota, and was the 2013 President of the Minnesota Concrete Council.

 

+"Fenestration Field Testing" presented by Ken Modeen

This presentation provides technical information about field testing of installed wood or fiberglass windows for air and water infiltration. The course covers field testing requirements, documents and specifications, procedures, and results.

 

As a window and door expert for Marvin Windows and Doors, Mr. Modeen's current responsibilities are to train architects and contractors in the proper methods for the installation of windows and doors in both new construction building projects and in existing building structure window and door replacement projects, including historical.

 

Sixteen years as a partner/owner of Modeen Company LLP, a company specializing in window and door replacement. Mr. Modeen was a managing partner in the company which contracted for window and door replacement projects with major companies such as Builder's Square, Home Depot, as well as remodeling contractors, individual commercial building owners and individual home owners around the Minneapolis and St Paul, Minnesota metro area. Modeen Company LLP was also an authorized product installation and warranty service provider for manufacturers such as Pella windows, Loewen Windows, H Windows and Far North Windows.

+"Designing with Hardwood Veneer" presented by Margaret Fisher

Honorary Lifetime Member of the Architectural Woodwork Institute, Margaret Fisher has been involved in the custom woodwork industry for over three decades. Recognized as an industry leader, she has served as President and Vice President of the Wisconsin Chapter and served on the AWI National Board of Directors.

Wood & Wood Products Magazine featured her as a 2010 Market Leader. A past recipient of the Claude Twillenmeier award, she has also served on the Sustainable Resources Think Tank and Education Planning Committee.

 

As AWI’s most prolific speaker, thousands of design professionals and contractors all over North America have attended her educational programs on Quality Standards, Cores, Veneering, Moldings, Finishes, Using Wood in a LEED® project and how to overcome your fear of speaking which she has been authoring and instructing since 1997. Woodworkers have listened to her 12 part podcast series on Using Wood in a LEED project and attended her trainings.

 

+"Designing Comm. Proj. w/ Manufactured Stone Veneer and Warranty Code Compliance" presented by Jason Lamers

Jason Lamers is the Area Sales Manager at Boral Stone Group and has been with Boral for 5 years. In addition to providing key account management in WI, MN, IA, NE, SD, and ND Jason serves as a technical product manager to architects, builders and masonry professionals. Jason has conducted over 150 AIA accredited presentations on proper installation of Manufactured Stone Veneer over the past 5 years. Jason has a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota.

 

+MnDot's Highway 53 Relocation Project: Thinking Outside the Box presented by Pat Huston

Pat Huston is Duluth native with 27 years at MnDOT in a wide range of positions. He holds a civil engineering degree from the U of M Twin Cities and is a licensed engineer in Minnesota.

Pat accepted the special assignment of TH 53 Project Director in 2014 and stayed with the project through completion (almost). He says it was the most challenging project of his career so far, and the best part was the fantastic team work throughout MnDOT, consultants, many other agencies and contractors. Everybody had the same jersey on and failure was not an option.

Pat is now back in Duluth working as part of the District 1 Duluth Management Team in the position of Assistant District Engineer – Project Support. A portion of his responsibility is for “major projects”. Next up is the replacement of the interchange formerly known as the “Can of Worms” – now referred to as the “Twin Ports Interchange”.

This presentation includes an in-depth review of the characteristics, benefits, and green credentials of pultruded fiberglass products, including high performance glazing systems that are available. As well, a review of the unique capabilities of fiberglass window systems is presented through a variety of commercial and residential featured projects.

Al Dueck, Owner and Founder of DUXTON Windows & Doors, has dedicated more than 25 years of his professional life to the window manufacturing industry. Graduating from the University of Manitoba with an MBA, Al has always been particularly passionate about product design and building envelopes. A large portion of his industry background involved leading edge glazing – technological advances offering greater energy efficiency, comfort, and durable warm edge configurations. Al is the founding president of Fenestration Manitoba and is also active within Fenestration Canada.

+"2015 Minnesota Commercial Energy Code"

The basic requirements of the newly adopted 2015 Minnesota Commercial Energy Code will be reviewed. The goal of this class is to provide a streamlined understanding of the requirements of the code compliance process for the new Energy Code. This class will also provide summary quidance to the designer on how to more effectively apply the Energy Code requirements to their projects.
